Dennis Rinaldi nets winning basket as Western New England edges Roger Williams by a point

BRISTOL, R.I. – Sophomore forward Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) scored a career high 18 points and made the winning basket with 15 seconds remaining as the Western New England men's basketball team posted a thrilling 69-68 victory over Roger Williams Thursday evening (Jan. 19) at the Campus Rec Center.

The Golden Bears, who rallied from a nine-point deficit with just under seven minutes remaining, are now 5-9 overall and 2-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).

After Rinaldi scored his winning basket on a tip-in, he made a key steal with five seconds left. Western New England turned the ball over before freshman forward Joseph Henry (Medway, MA) missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Rinaldi made 9-of-16 shots from the field and had eight rebounds along with three steals.

Senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) scored a game-high 24 points (including a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line) and had five rebounds with three assists. Sophomore forward Daniel Minto (West Hampstead, NY) compiled a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Roger Williams (8-7, 4-4 CCC) led 35-31 at halftime and by nine points three times in the second half, the last at 60-51 when junior forward Mike Engemann (Red Bank, NJ) fired in a three-pointer with 6:57 to play.

Western New England went on a12-2 run to take a 63-62 lead when Rinaldi made a layup at the 2:57 mark.

Each team took a two-point lead before junior guard Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, NY) sank two free throws to give the hosts a 68-67 lead with 40 seconds remaining.

Senior Pat Flanagan (Somerville, MA) led the Hawks with 22 points making 11-of-17 shots. The 6'9” center completed the double-double by grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.

Western New England shot a season best 45.9% from the field while Roger Williams connected on 42.9% of its shots.

The Golden Bears made up for making 18 turnovers by holding a big 44-28 advantage off the boards
