Slow start hurts Western New England in 5-1 loss against Nichols in ECAC Northeast game

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Western New England allowed three early goals and never caught up in suffering a 5-1 loss against Nichols in an ECAC Northeast men's hockey game Saturday (Jan. 28) at the June R. Levy Rink.

This was the third straight loss for the Golden Bears who drop tot 9-10 overall and 4-4 in league play.

The Bison (7-11, 5-3 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead 2:34 into the contest.on a goal by junior defenseman Will Brown (Hershey, PA).

Freshman forward Louie Educate (Chicago, IL) gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage at 7:14 and senior forward Andrew Elia (Schomberg, ONT) added the third goal just 11 seconds later.

Western New England got on the board when sophomore forward Dan Monahan (Monroe, NY) scored a short-handed goal at 9:34 with an assist from sophomore forward Trent Krueger (White Bear Lake, MN).

Freshman goalie Tim Carr (Pine Bush, NY) replaced sophomore Eric Sorenson (Fairport, CT) in the opening period and kept the Golden Bears in the game by making 16 saves in the second period as neither team found the net.

Nichols broke the game open with goals by Elia at 3:00 and junior forward Danny Greiner (Columbus, OH) at 16:46 in the final stanza.

Senior goalie Jacob Rinn (Warwick, RI) compiled 27 saves for the Bison who have won four straight games.

Carr finished with 34 saves in his second appearance of the season. Sorenson had seven saves during his time on the ice.
