Western New England battles past host Nichols 65-45 in conference contest

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) scored a season high 26 points to lead the Western New England women's basketball team to 65-45 victory over Nichols Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28).

The Golden Bears improved their record to 8-10 overall after winning for the fourth time in their last five outings and 7-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Bison fell to 4-14 and 3-8 in conference play.

Savino, who didn't play in a 65-59 loss to Nichols back on December 3 in Springfield, made 10-of-16 shots from the field (including a pair of three pointers) and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.

Western New England led 34-23 at halftime and by as many as 24 points in the second half when Savino made two free throws with 4:14 to play.

Sophomore guard Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) added 12 points for the Golden Bears who connected on 46.9% of their field-goal attempts.

Freshman center Sam McCann (Warren, MA) contributed nine points and six rebounds. Senior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) chipped-in with eight points.

Nichols shot only 30.4% from the field and committed 22 turnovers.

Freshman guard Carley Turpel (Berkley, MA) led the Bison with 11 points while freshman Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, MA) had eight points and six rebounds.
