CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Western New England University lost a pair of 5-set matches on Saturday to wrap up the 2012 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Quadrangular Volleyball Tournament with a 1-2 record, losing to host MIT 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 15-6 before falling to Bridgewater (Va.) College 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 14-25, 15-12. The Golden Bears fall to 17-5 on the season.
Against the sixth-ranked Division III team in New England,
Tyler Singh led the Western New England offense with 12 kills, followed by
Emily McGran with 11 and all-tournament selection
Inna Sergeychik and
Devyn Frank with nine apiece. The Golden Bears hit .205 as a team. Defensively,
Kendra Ouimette had a team-best 14 digs,
Grace Kucharski and Sergeychik had 12 apiece.
Heather Mears contributed 43 assists and four service aces.
"We came out strong in the first set. They made some nice adjustments as our offense slowed to 20 kills and 10 hitting errors over the next two sets," Western New England coach Bret Stothart said. "I was proud of how we bounced back in the fourth. Unfortunately, they played better than us in set five and we allowed some runs of points, and in a short game we just didn't have time to recover."
In the schools' first-ever meeting against Bridgewater, Frank and Singh had nine kills each while Sergeychik posted eight to go along with 19 digs, five blocks and four aces.
"Despite the two losses, I thought we played well this weekend. Our play continues to improve while we further learn about our strengths and weaknesses," he said.
