SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--John Krafick completed 20 of 24 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns, and
Kevin Cook rushed for 116 yards, as Western New England University rolled over MIT 36-14 in a New England Football Conference-Boyd Division game at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday. With the win, the Golden Bears (4-3, 2-2 NEFC-Boyd) avoided their first three-game losing streak in three years. The Engineers, meanwhile, fell to the .500-mark at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Things didn't start well for Western New England, however, as it was fooled by a fake punt in the first quarter that resulted in a long touchdown on MIT's first possession. Facing a 4th and 1 at his own 23, quarterback Peter Williams was in punt formation when he took the snap and ran 77 yards down the right sideline for a 7-0 lead at the 10:38 mark.
But the Golden Bears responded on its next drive with a 29-yard field by
Nick Fox-Edele 3 minutes and 31 seconds later.
Western New England took the lead for good during the second quarter, capitalizing on an interception by Phil Tsopanides who made his season debut after missing the team's first six games due to an injury. Cook plunged for a 2-yard TD to cap a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive in 4:01 elapsed time.
Williams finished with 107 yards on the ground and 217 yards on 15 completions but he threw four interceptions. Justin Wallace, who entered the game ranked third in NEFC-rushing, was held 61 yards below his 99.6 average. Samuel Inman caught six balls for 107 yards, including a 32-yarder with 1:17 left to play.
Defensively,
Nathan Fleming led the Golden Bears with 13 tackles, followed by
Nicholas Silvester with seven,
Corey Brown and
Greg Hanson with six apiece. Tsopanides made four stops and
Alex Miller had his nation-leading seventh interception.
MIT's Jake Laux led all players with 19 tackles, followed by Matt Merlino with 17 and Cameron Wagar had 14.
Krafick bulldozed his way into the end zone from a yard out to open the scoring in the second half for a 22-7 advantage, punctuating an 83-yard drive on five plays.
