BEVERLY, Mass.--Despite piling up season highs with 256 rush yards, 323 pass yards and 579 yards of total offense, the Western New England football team found itself on the short end of a 50-45 road loss to Endicott College at Endicott Stadium in New England Football Conference Boyd Division action. The Gulls improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the NEFC, while the Golden Bears fall to 5-4 and 3-3.
Three of Western New England's four losses have come by a combined 10 points--and those close games have all been on the road.
Things started well enough for Western New England as
John Krafick connected with
Mike Uszakiewicz on a 16-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, capping a 14-play, 79-yard opening drive that consumed 4 minutes and 57 seconds.
Krafick finished with 323 yards passing on 24 completions and four touchdowns.
Andrew Walz was his favorite target, catching six passes for 135 yards and a pair of TDs. Uszakiewicz also hauled in a couple of TDs.
Dan LaNoir also had six receptions for 67 yards.
On the ground,
Kevin Cook rumbled for a career-high 192 yards and two TDs.
Mike Murphy caught five touchdowns among 11 overall, including a 13-yarder from Drew Frenette to help the Gulls respond to WNE's first drive and then he had a go-ahead 9-yard reception, for 139 yards. Frenette was 27 of 39 for 342 yards and six TDs while he wasn't sacked.
The EC defense was led by linemen Marcell Cooper who had a team-high 13 tackles, eight of which were solo, one tackle for a loss and a forced fumble. Defensive back Jason Silva had 10 tackles with a pass breakup and three other players, PJ Bandini, Peter Kallas and Andrew Holfinger all added nine tackles each.
For the Golden Bears, junior linebacker Nathan Fleming had a game-high 16 takedowns, nine of which were solo, while forcing and recovering a fumble. Andrew Imperatore added 11 tackles in the loss. Senior defensive back Corey Brown had Western New England's lone interception with a 15-yard return.
