MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--Western New England University scored three goals in the second period to earn a 3-2 victory Wednesday over host Becker in Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast men's hockey action at the New England Sports Center. The Golden Bears improve to 5-2 overall, including 4-0 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Ice Hawks drop to 3-5 and 0-4.
After the teams skated to a scoreless first period, the Golden Bears' special teams took over in the second led by junior co-captains
John Kelly and
Brian Prost. Sophomore
Brandon Stroud put WNE on the board with a power play tally midway through the stanza and junior
Dan Monahan made it 2-0 by scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal at the 17:35 mark. After Don Kane pulled Becker within 2-1 on the power play with just 55 seconds left, Kelly netted an extra-man goal of his own 50 ticks later.
Kelly's first goal of the season proved to be a game-winner as Becker made it 3-2 on David Graham's sixth goal at 6:50 in the third period.
Prost finished the game with two assists.
Both teams had 30 shots on goal with WNE sophomore
Tim Carr (3-0) making 28 saves and his counterpart Gregg Hussey stopping 27 attempts.
The Golden Bears were 2-for-5 with the man-advantage while Becker converted 1-of-7 chances.
Hussey was pulled for the last 1 minute and 30 seconds of the game in favor of an extra attacker, but the Ice Hawks couldn't get the equalizer to force overtime.
