Tim Carr made 29 saves, as the Western New England University men's hockey team earned a convincing 5-1 non-conference victory Tuesday over Worcester State in the Golden Bears' home opener at Smead Arena. The visiting Lancers fall to 0-3 while the Golden Bears are now 1-1.
After the teams skated to a scoreless tie after the first period, Western New England had the only offense it would need with a pair of late goals in the second. Freshman
Chris Lembo tallied his second of the season with 1 minute and 32 seconds left and then sophomore
Nick Diorio made it 2-0 just 40 seconds later.
The Golden Bears put the game away with two quick goals in the third period, with Martin netting his first of the contest at the 4:16 mark and then sophomore
Brandon Stroud following up just 25 seconds later.
Nathan Stanley spoiled Carr's shutout bid with less than 5 minutes left in the game, with Stephen Rock and Derek Serbon getting the assists on Stanley's second goal of the season.
The Lancers employed three goaltenders, including starter Mark Evans (19 saves, 3 goals allowed, charged with the loss), Drew Case (6 saves, 2 goals) and Salvatore Tecci (1 save).
Western New England had the edge in shots, 31 to 30, and both teams potted a power play goal (WNE in three attempts; WSU, two).
