Salve Regina rolls to 74-48 victory over Western New England in CCC semifinal game

NEWPORT, R.I. – Senior center Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, MA) exploded for 30 points to lead second-seeded Salve Regina to a 74-48 victory over third-seeded Western New England in a semifinal round game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Basketball Championship Thursday evening (Feb. 23) at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Sophomore forward Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, MA) contributed 21 points as the Seahawks (18-9) advanced to the championship game at home Saturday against fourth-seeded Endicott who posted a 53-49 win over top-seeded University of New England.

Shorey had a big game making 13-of-21 shots from the field while grabbing nine rebounds and making three steals. Pendergast also had a top performance with eight rebounds and five steals.

Also scoring in double figures was junior guard Sarah Averill (Newfields, NH) who had 10 points. Junior guard Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, RI) scored only six points, but dished out 14 assists and had nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) scored the first basket of the game to give Western New England a 2-0 lead, but SRU ran off 14 straight points and never looked back in taking a 36-22 lead at halftime. The hosts maintained their double digit lead the rest of the game.

Junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) led the Golden Bears with 18 points after making 7-of-15 shots from the field. Senior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) tallied nine points and had 10 rebounds in her final collegiate game.

Western New England, who defeated SRU twice during the regular season by eight and four points, shot only 34.5% from the floor and committed 22 turnovers. Salve Regina made 43.1% of its field-goal attempts and turned the ball over only nine times in addition to having a 46-37 advantage in rebounding.

Western New England ends its season with a 14-13 record for its third consecutive winning season and sixth in the last seven seasons under the direction of Coach Nicole Chaszar.
