Box Score
BEVERLY, Mass. – Junior guard
Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) scored a career high 21 points to lead the Western New England men's basketball team to an 83-74 victory over Endicott Saturday (Feb. 4) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest.
Senior guard
Andre Shaw (New York, NY) added 19 points, sophomore forward
Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, NY) had 12, and sophomore center
Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) chipped-in with 10 as the Golden Bears had four players in double figures. Shaw (who had five assists) and Minto each pulled down nine rebounds.
This was the highest scoring total of the season for Western New England who ended a three-game skid while raising their record to 7-13 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
The Golden Bears used excellent free-throw shooting to help win the game, making 26-of-31 attempts (83.9%), while making only two turnovers.
Western New England, who suffered a 20-point loss (78-58) to the Gulls back on January 5 in Springfield, have played well recently, but couldn't get into the winning column after dropping games by three and four points, respectively, in their last two outings.
But a second-half comeback enabled the Golden Bears to gain an important road win that kept their playoff hopes alive with two weeks left in the regular season.
Endicott (12-8, 7-6 CCC) led 41-36 at halftime and held an eight-point advantage at 58-50 when junior guard
Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA) scored on a layup with 11:46 to play.
Western New England chipped away at the lead using a 16-7 run to take a 66-65 lead on a layup by Minto with 7:19 remaining. It was still a one point game at 72-71 with just over four minutes left when Shaw and Rinaldi made baskets for a 76-71 margin with 1:39 left.
Freshman forward
Andre Makris (Southbury, CT) led the hosts with 18 points followed by Greene with 14 and sophomore guard
Lachlan Magee (Melbourne, Australia) with 10. Markris and Greene also had nine and six rebounds apiece.
