BEVERLY, Mass. – Western New England ran its winning streak to five games with a solid 60-47 victory over Endicott Saturday (Feb. 4) in a battle of two of the top women's basketball teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).
The Golden Bears, who have won seven of their last eight outings, are now 11-10 overall and 10-4 in the conference. WNE is 8-2 on the road this season, including 7-0 against CCC opponents. Endicott, which had won five straight at home, falls to 12-8 and 9-4 in conference action.
Junior guard
Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) once again led the way by tying her season high with 26 points. She also had six steals and four rebounds. Savino is the CCC Player-of-the-Week and member of the d3hoops.com National Team-of-the-Week.
Sophomore guard
Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) added 12 and eight rebounds while senior forward
Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) contributed 11 points and five rebounds.
Western New England took an early 18-8 advantage when Savino made a three-pointer at the 11:23 mark and never lost its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. The Golden Bears shot 55.6% from the field in taking a 40-24 cushion at halftime.
Endicott got within 45-34 after sophomore forward
Samantha Crough (Cohasset, MA) sank a three-pointer with 13:23 to play. Savino followed with a layup and Proper made two more baskets for a 51-34 margin and the Gulls didn't get any closer than 11 points (twice) again.
Crough finished with 18 points and had four rebounds. Sophomore center
Julie Manning (Hull, MA) netted 12 points and pulled own six rebounds coming off the bench as the reserves scored almost half (23) of the team's points.
Sophomore guard
Jennifer White (Lisbon, NH) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to give the hosts a 41-35 edge in that category.
