SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard
Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, MA) poured-in 30 points to lead the Springfield men's basketball team to an 85-70 non-conference victory over visiting Western New England in a battle of city rivals Monday evening (Feb. 6) at Blake Arena.
Berthiaume had an impressive performance making 13-of-20 shots from field, which included 3-of-5 three-pointers. He also had four rebounds, two assists, and a pair of blocks.
Senior guard
Jordan Rote (Sheffield, MA) added 15 points coming off the bench for the Pride who improved their record to 15-7.
Freshman guard
Nick Senkiewicz (Cranston, RI) contributed to the win by scoring 14 points after making all six shots from the field, including both three-pointers.
Springfield shot 53.7% from the field and had a big 21-6 edge in free throws made, but couldn't put the Golden Bears way until the last nine minutes of the game.
Western New England (7-14) enjoyed a four-point lead until the Pride used a 12-5 run in the last 4:36 to take a 39-36 advantage at the break.
The Golden Bears regained the lead at 46-43 following a three-pointer by senior guard
Andre Shaw (New York, NY) with 15:57 to play.
Sophomore guard
Sean Martin (Rindge, NH) (8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists) broke a 48-48 tie with a three-point play to give the hosts the lead for good with 14:03 left.
Springfield, who dropped a 69-67 home decision against No. 5 MIT on Saturday, extended its lead to 10 (64-54) when Rote made a layup at the 10:45 mark.
WNE cut the gap in half (66-61) when junior guard
Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) scored on a layup and sophomore guard
Ryan Mickiewicz (East Longmeadow, MA) made a free throw with 8:59 remaining.
Springfield, however, pulled away down the stretch as the Golden Bears scored only nine points the rest of the way.
Shaw led Western New England with 21 points after making 8-of-11 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 three-pointers. He also pulled down six rebounds.
Minto finished with 15 points (6-for-9 from the field) and eight rebounds while Alston chipped-in with 14 points.
The Golden Bears finished shooting 44.8% from the field and had a 35-31 edge in rebounds.
