CLERMONT, Fla. – The Western New England softball team opened its season by splitting a doubleheader Saturday (March 17) at the National Training Complex.
The Golden Bears dropped a 9-1 five-inning decision to Lawrence (WI) in the first contest, then bounced back for a 7-3 victory over Bates.
Lawrence scored four times in the third inning and five runs in the fourth to break the game open. The big hit in the fifth was a three-run triple by junior center fielder Cathy Kaye (Sturgeon Bay, WI).
Junior pitcher
Shannon Murray (Lawrenceville, GA) allowed seven hits, struck out three, and didn't walk a batter in gaining the victory. She also drove in a pair of runs with a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly for the Vikings (2-1).
Western New England freshman right fielder
Jocelyn Agnelli (Winchendon, MA) doubled in her first collegiate at-bat and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Freshman first base player
Grace Kucharski (Avon, CT) had a run-scoring single to drive in the only WNE run. Senior
Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) was the losing pitcher.
Western New England jumped to an early 3-0 after three innings against Bates, then moved to a 7-1 advantage after scoring four times in the fourth inning.
Senior catcher
Rachel Wrywa (Methuen, MA) went 2-for-2 with a triple and four RBI. Agnelli singled, walked, scored twice, and drove in a run.
Senior
Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) gained the win after pitching five innings. She allowed six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.
Bates senior right fielder
Karen Ullman (Ramsey, NJ) had two hits, a run scored, and RBI. The Bobcats are now 2-4.
