SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England softball team opened its home season with a 16-2 victory over Smith in a game that ended after five innings because of the mercy rule Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 28).
Senior first base player
Sara Barnes (Berkley, MA) and freshman left fielder
Avery Clark (Mystic, CT) each had three hits and scored three runs as the Golden Bears improved to 4-7. Barnes, who didn't play last year because of an injury, also had a double and knocked in three runs.
Western New England finished with 18 hits with 10 coming in a 10-run third inning that broke the game open.
Senior catcher
Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA), junior shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY), sophomore third base player
Katie Eckert (Lee, MA), sophomore center fielder
Maria Francese (Hinsdale, MA), and freshman designated player
Emily Mastropaolo (Cazenovia, NY) each contributed two hits and combined for eight runs and five RBI.
Senior
Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) gave up two unearned runs, three hits, and walked two with no strikeouts n three inning to raise her record to 3-2. Freshman
Carolyn Hajdusek (Northfield, NH) pitched the last two innings striking out three and not allowing any hits or walks.
Smith's scored twice in the third to get within 6-2 following RBI singles by junior right fielder/pitcher
Tessa Clark (Calais, ME) and senior third base player
Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, MA).
The Pioneers, who defeated Elms 2-1 on Monday, fall to 2-8.
