SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior first base player
Sara Barnes (Berkley, MA) drove in the winning run with a two-out single to left center field as the Western New England softball team rallied for a dramatic 3-2 victory over Westfield State Thursday afternoon (Mar. 29).
This was the second straight win for the Golden Bears who are now 5-7 while the Owls drop to 6-8.
Barnes knocked in senior catcher
Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) who singled to center with two outs in the seventh and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Trailing 2-0, Wyrwa and junior shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) each had run-scoring doubles to help Western New England tie the game in the fifth inning.
Barnes, Wyrwa, and sophomore center fielder
Maria Francese (Hinsdale, MA) each finished with two hits with Francese also stealing a base.
Senior pitcher
Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) settled down after a shaky second inning to retire the last eight batters in raising her record to 2-1. She allowed five hits, didn't walk a better, and had six strikeouts.
Westfield State scored both its runs in the second when freshman second base player
Breanne Bisceglia (Worcester, MA) and senior right fielder
Lisa Policelli (Tewksbury, MA) each singled to left, and freshman third base player
Vicki Hill (West Springfield, MA) had a bunt single to load the bases. Bisceglia and Policelli both scored when the Golden Bears botched a pair of grounders.
Senior
Madeline Tomich (Alford, MA) went the first six innings giving up five hits while walking four and striking out 10. She pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth. Freshman
Emily Mailloux (Erving, MA) got two quick outs in the seventh before taking the loss in relief.
