Western New England captures conference slugfest over Gordon by pair of 9-6 scores

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England softball team defeated Gordon by identical 9-6 scores in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 14). Senior pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) had a win and save along with four hits while senior catcher Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) compiled five hits in the sweep.

The Golden Bears are now 11-13 overall and 5-3 in the conference while the Fighting Scots drop to 4-21 and 3-9 in conference play.

Game 1 – Western New England 9, Gordon 6

Sophomore third baseman Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles to pace the 10-hit attack. Also collecting two hits were Wyrwa, sophomore center fielder Maria Francese (Hinsdale, MA), and freshman right fielder Hannah Hill (Malden, MA).

Lempicki went five innings allowing nine hits and four runs (three earned) with no walks and five strikeouts in moving her record to 6-3. Senior Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) pitched the final two innings. She gave up two runs and two hits, and had two strikeouts.

Western New England led the entire game but Gordon pulled within 5-4 in the fourth before the Golden Bears scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the fifth with a two-run double by Eckert giving the hosts a 9-4 advantage.

The Fighting Scots banged out 11 hits as senior catcher Liz Cheesman (Winslow, ME) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Sophomore shortstop Kendall Burkuras (North Falmouth, MA) had a double, homer, two runs scored, and three RBI. Senior left fielder Rachel Otto (Plymouth, NH) also had two of the team's 11 hits.

Game 2 – Western New England 9, Gordon 6

Trailing 4-1 in the third, Western New England scored five runs in the bottom of the inning and never lost the lead after that.

The Golden Bears finished with 14 hits as Wyrwa just missed the cycle with a single, double, and homer. She scored three times and had three RBI.

Lempicki, who started the game as the designated player, added two singles and a double with a RBI and two runs scored. She pitched the final two innings allowing only two hits and an unearned run while strikeout out two to earn the save.

Obin (5-5) got the win in relief giving up five hits with a run and strikeout in two-and-two-thirds innings.

Francese, Hill, and junior left fielder Laura Madaio (Paxton, MA) each contributed two hits with Madaio also getting two RBI.

Gordon had another strong offensive showing with 14 hits as freshman right fielder Gabriel Roberts (Chocorua, NH) was 4-for-4 with a RBI. Burkuras (who went 5-for-7 in the two games) had three singles. Freshman second base player Rachel Ryder (Wyckoff, NJ) added a single and double. Senior third base player Kerry McPartian (Yonkers, NY) belted a solo homer leading off the fifth.
