SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England softball team dropped its second straight doubleheader in as many days after losing 7-1 and 4-3 to Trinity in non-conference action Thursday afternoon (Apr. 19).

The Golden Bears saw their record fall to 12-18 while the Bantams raise their mark to 12-14.

Freshman second base player Miranda Riendeau-Card (Bowdoinham, ME) had a big day for the visitors with four hits, including a pair of homers. Senior designated hitter/pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) also had four hits (including a pair of doubles) for Western New England.

Game 1 – Trinity 7, Western New England 1

Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI double by Lempicki who finished with three hits.

Trinity came back with three runs in the second when sophomore catcher Olivia Berry (Quincy, MA) delivered a run-scoring single and sophomore designated player Claire Prosperi (Northbrook, IL) followed with a sacrifice fly. Senior right fielder Kristina Yu (Andover, MA) hit into a fielder's choice that scored the third run.

Riendeau-Carl then blasted a two-run homer in the fifth for a 5-1 advantage and added a RBI single in the seventh along with Prosperi to complete the scoring. Junior shortstop Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, CT) and sophomore third base player Abigail Ostrom (Carlisle, MA) each had two of the team's 11 hits.

Western New England finished with nine hits, but stranded nine runners on base. A couple of promising freshmen, shortstop Hannah Hill (Malden, MA) and first base player Grace Kucharski (Avon, CT) both had two singles.

Senior Katherine Poulos (Wilton, CT) (4-9) gained the win while senior Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) (6-6) had the loss.

Game 2 – Trinity 4, Western New England 3

The Bantams scored all their runs via the long ball with four players smacking home runs.

Trinity hit three over the fence in the second beginning when Riendeau-Card opened the inning with her seventh round tripper of the season. One out later Berry and Prosperi hit back-to-back blasts.

The Golden Bears battled back with a pair of runs in the fourth when Lempicki doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch. Senior catcher Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) doubled in the second run, but chances for a big inning were halted when sophomore center fielder Christina Galese (Fairfield, CT) threw out a runner at home to end the inning.

Junior left fielder Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, CA) led off the sixth with a homer to give Trinity a 4-3 lead.

Western New England rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Lempicki walked with the bases loaded and two outs against Poulos who entered the game in relief of senior Lindsay Gibbons (Basking Ridge, NJ) (5-0).

Poulos saved the game when she got Kucharski on a called third strike after she fouled off four pitches with two strikes.

Trinity had 10 hits with Blanchard, Berry, and Yu each collecting a pair of singles.

Lempicki, who pitched the first five innings, reached base three times after also walking twice. She now has a 6-6 record.
