SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England softball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with Curry taking the opener 5-3 before dropping the second contest 3-2 Saturday afternoon (Apr. 21).

The Golden Bears are now 13-19 overall and 7-7 in conference action. The Colonels have a 19-16 record, which includes a 7-9 CCC ledger.

Game 1 – Western New England 5, Curry 3

Senior catcher Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) smacked a two-out, two-run double to highlight a three-run fifth inning that gave the Golden bears a 4-2 lead. Two of the runs in the inning were unearned.

Freshman right fielder Jocelyn Agnelli (Winchendon, MA) had a RBI double in the third and run-scoring single in the fifth.

Freshman pinch-hitter Emily Mastropaolo (Cazenovia, NY) knocked-in the final run with a single in the sixth that opened a 5-2 lead. Senior pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) (7-6) had a complete game win allowing 10 hits with a walk and five strikeouts. She also singled and scored a run.

The Colonels had a pair of two-hit outings from sophomore right fielder Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, CT) and junior center fielder Valarie LaSala (Seaford, NY).

Curry took a 2-0 lead in the first on a run-producing double by senior left fielder Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, CA) and RBI single by Vigeant. The visitors scored a run in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate before Lempicki got the final out.

Freshman Taylor Ahearn (Salem, MA) (9-7) pitched well in defeat giving up five hits and only two earned runs with no walks and four strikeouts.

Game 2 – Curry 3, Western New England 2

Curry pushed across an unearned run in the seventh to gain the win after tying the score in the sixth when sophomore shortstop Megan Flaherty (Medway, MA) led off the inning with a homer.

The Golden Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first when Lempicki clouted a two-run homer. She went 3-for-3 with a walk as the designated player. Wyrwa added a single and double. Senior Alyssa Obin (6-7) was the hard-luck loser giving up five hits and one earned run with a walk and two strikeouts.

LaSala had her second straight two-hit game for the Colonels who received a fine pitching performance from sophomore Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, MA) (5-5) who went the distance allowing eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Two of her strikeouts came in the seventh when the Golden Bears had runners on first and third.
