BEVERLY, Mass. – Third-seeded University of New England scored an unearned run with two outs in the sixth inning to claim a 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Western New England in a first-round game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Softball Championship Monday (Apr. 30).

The game marked a brilliant pitching duel between WNE senior Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) and UNE freshman Kelly Reid (Nantucket, MA) who won the match-up after tossing a three-hitter. She struck out four and didn't walk a batter in raising her record to 13-4.

Lempicki (9-8) was just as impressive giving up three hits as well with eight strikeouts and only one walk.

Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the first when freshman left fielder Hannah Hill (Malden, MA) belted her first career homer to left field.

The Nor'easters tied the contest on a solo homer by junior second base player Erin Grover (Biddeford, ME) with one out in the fourth.

Lempicki got out of a first inning jam with a runner on third and one out when Grover lined to sophomore third base player Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) who completed the unassisted double play. Except for Grover's homer, Lempicki didn't allow a runner past first base until the deciding sixth.

In that inning, senior catcher Ashley Gott (Winterport, ME) singled with one out and stole second. She moved to third on a grounder and scored on a Golden Bears' miscue.

Reid allowed singles to sophomore centerfielder Maria Francese (Hinsdale, MA) in the fifth and Lempicki in the sixth.

Western New England (16-22) will meet fourth-seeded Roger Williams (19-22) at 2:30 p.m. Thursday (May 3) in a loser's bracket game of the double elimination championship in Newport, Rhode Island. The Hawks fell to top-seeded Salve Regina 3-1 on Monday.

UNE (24-12) followed its win over the Golden Bears with a 3-0 shutout over second-seed Endicott to advance to a winner's bracket game against Salve Regina also at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
