Grace Kucharski recorded a match-best 16 digs on Thursday at Southern Vermont, but it wasn't enough as the Western New England University volleyball team lost a 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 decision to the Mountaineers. On an evening featuring a pair of 7-0 squads entering the match, the visiting Golden Bears saw their 11-match winning streak during the regular season dating to 2011 snapped.
Devyn Frank and
Kasey Cameron led the Western New England offense with eight and six kills, respectively. Frank added a .350 hitting percentage on 20 attack attempts.
Jessica Alvarez sparked Southern Vermont with a match-high 14 kills, followed by Danielle Healis with 11, a .450 hitting clip and three blocks.
Both teams committed 18 hitting errors and nearly the same attack attempts (112-109, SVC) but the Mountaineers were the more efficient team on offense. They had 16 more kills (43) than the Golden Bears (27), who recorded a season-low .083 percentage.
Things boded well for Western New England in the early going, racing to a 10-4 lead in the opening set.
