SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University women's tennis team won two of three doubles matches and all but one in singles to cruise to a 7-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Wednesday over visiting Salve Regina at the Volvo Outdoor Tennis Facility. Both squads now stand at 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Western New England headed into singles play with a 2-1 lead after
Linda Mustafa/
Valerie Conway and
Kelly Byrnes/
Juliette Cormier picked up No. 1 and 2 doubles play by 8-1 and 8-2 results, respectively.
"This young team showed heart and mental focus today," Western New England coach Jennifer Kolins said after the match. "The positive attitudes and energy helped them to bounce back from a tough loss on Saturday and compete for the victory today. Our freshman doubles team set the stage for consistency and smart play, and every match played today showed persistence and sheer determination."
It was all Golden Bears in singles where they took five flights, including four in straight sets: Mustafa (#1: 6-2, 6-2); Conway (#2: 6-3, 6-3),
Alysha Lesieur (#3: 6-2, 6-1) and
Gillian Adams (#4: 6-4, 6-2).
Lindsey Brudvig also won a thriller at No. 4, trading 6-3 scores with Kristen Rose before prevailing 1-0 in a superset tiebreaker, 10-7, because the outcome of the teams' match had already been decided.
