NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the season after earning a hard-fought 26-24, 25-15, 17-25, 21-25, 15-8 non-conference victory at Smith College on Tuesday evening. The host Pioneers, who beat Western New England a year ago for the first time since 2000, were playing their 2012 opener.
Maureen Pollet led Western New England with 17 kills, while
Devyn Frank added 12 and
Kasey Cameron had 13.
Heather Mears racked up a season-high 47 assists, and
Grace Kucharski recorded a match-best 22 digs.
Smith led for most of the first set, opening up a 20-15 advantage, but Western New England closed the frame by outscoring the Pioneers 11-4 to go up 1-0 in the match. The Golden Bears took the second set on runs of 12-6 and 13-7 to take a two-set lead. Then they had to hang on for the road win.
Western New England is 3-0 for the first time since 2008.
