Assumption Pins First Home Shutout in Four Seasons on Western New England

Box Score Boxscore

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Despite outshooting visiting Assumption 38 to 29 on Tuesday, the Western New England University men's hockey program suffered its first shutout loss on home ice in four seasons with a 2-0 defeat at Smead Rink at Blunt Park. The NCAA Division II-affiliated Greyhounds improve to 3-13-1 overall after this non-conference matchup, while the Golden Bears fall to 6-9.

After the teams played to a scoreless first period, Jon Baldwin gave Assumption all the offense it would need with a power-play goal midway through the second stanza. Nick Mattiello added an insurance tally late in the period.

Bobby Bowden stopped all 38 shots he faced to chalk up the first shutout of his collegiate career. Senior T.J. Fatse made his first start of the season for Western New England, recording 27 stops.

Western New England applied offensive pressure in the second period with a 16-5 shots on goal margin alone.

The Golden Bears continued to work to get on the scoreboard late in the game when they pulled Fatse in favor of an extra attacker for the final 1 minute and 19 seconds.

Before this evening, Southern New Hampshire--another Division II foe--on Nov. 11, 2008, was the last team to shut out Western New England on its home ice...by an identical 2-0 score.
