Strong Second Period Lifts Men's Hockey at Framingham State

Boxscore

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--Junior forward Chris Connors and freshman defenseman Will Preston each tallied a goal and an assist to lead Western New England to a 5-2 non-conference men's hockey victory over Framingham State at Loring Arena on Tuesday, snapping the Golden Bears' seven-game losing streak. Visiting Western New England improves to 7-10 on the season, while the Rams of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference drop to 2-13-1.

The Rams were led by sophomore Ryan McDonald who tallied both Framingham goals, while junior Tom Tracy, sophomores Dylan Cosford and Brendan McCarron and freshman Melvin Rose all chipped in with assists.

Junior center Alan Martin scored the first of three Western New England power play goals on the night with only 15 seconds left in the opening period for a 1-0 lead. The unassisted goal signaled Martin's team-leading 10th of the season.

After McDonald tied it 1-1 at the 3:37 mark of the second period, Western New England rattled off three goals--two coming on the man-advantage--during a 2-minute and 39-second span to seize control. Connors started the scoring outburst on a power play at 5:44, followed by junior co-captain John Kelly just 11 seconds later. Preston wrapped it up with another power play tally, on an assist from Connors, at 8:23.

The Golden Bears finished 3-for-7 in power-play opportunities while the Rams went 0-for-6.

McDonald scored his team-leading 13th goal late in the second period to make it 4-2, but it wasn't enough for the Rams who are winless at home (0-7) this season.

Western New England junior co-captain Brian Prost concluded the scoring for both teams with an empty-net goal, unassisted, with 17 seconds remaining in the contest.

Sophomore Tim Carr stopped 38 shots for WNE while Herbert Kyles had 35 saves.
