Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior co-captain
John Krafick passed for 304 yards, including a game-winning 25-yard touchdown strike to
Andrew Walz, as Western New England came from behind to edge visiting Union College (N.Y.), 33-30 in double overtime, in non-conference football action at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday. Both teams--meeting for the first time ever--are now 2-4 on the season.
Krafick finished with 21 completions on 32 attempts in eclipsing 300 yards passing for the first time this fall. He connected with Walz on another touchdown passing play in the third quarter.
After David Pope's 28-yard field goal put Union ahead 30-27 to start the second overtime, Krafick was flushed out of the pocket and found Walz near the right pylon on the goal line, reaching back with outstretched arms to break the plane with the ball to cap the comeback win on WNE's first touch.
Walz finished with career highs of 10 catches and school-record 183 yards to lead all receivers in both categories. The previous WNE record for receiving yards in a game was 161 by Mike Roach versus Sacred Heart in 1995, and Walz broke it on the final play for the sudden-victory after getting the ball near the right pylon and then reaching with outstretched arms over the goal line to break the plane.
Kevin Cook also ran for 79 yards--six short of earning fifth place on the all-time rushing list at WNE.
Darnel Thomas paced the Dutchmen offense with 165 yards rushing on 25 attempts and three touchdowns of 45 yards, 3 and 1. Thomas helped give Union a 7-0 lead with 3 minutes and 57 seconds to go in the opening quarter.
Cook scampered for nine yards to give WNE a 27-20 advantage with the touchdown and extra-point in the first overtime before Union countered with a 1-yard TD plunge by Thomas to draw even.ÂÂ
The teams ended regulation tied 20-20 after Union forced the extra sessions on the second of three Thomas touchdown runs, capping a 7-play, 50-yard drive in 3:21.
Sophomore linebackerÂÂ
Nathan Fleming spearheaded a Golden Bears defense with a WNE-season-high 16 tackles (6 solo) to lead all players--one shy of his career high.ÂÂ
Kyle Jones added 11 stops, followed byÂÂ
Brandon Ormsby,ÂÂ
Ryan Nolte with nine apiece,ÂÂ
Obi Etuka had eight, andÂÂ
Kevin Soule, seven (including 2-1/2 sacks).ÂÂ
The WNE defense earned three takeaways and saved three points in the first quarter whenÂÂ
Scott Maille blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt to stall Union's opening drive that had consumed 16 plays over 8:48 at the WNE 6.ÂÂ
Western New England came back from deficits of 7-0, 13-7 and 30-27 to tie the game or win the game in the extra sessions.
The offenses mirrored one another with 402 to 401 total yards in favor of Union and both teams had 82 plays. The Dutchmen enjoyed a decided advantage in time of possession, 34:10 to 25:50.
