WENHAM, Mass. -The Western New England University women's tennis team brought out the best in a Gordon College (8-5 overall, 4-3 CCC) squad that clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs for the first time in several years, blanking the Golden Bears 9-0 on Wednesday at the Brigham Tennis Courts. The Golden Bears fall to 4-8 on the year and 1-6 in conference play.
Jessie Dupre and Kristin Dillon were celebrated on Senior Day for their commitment to the Gordon program in the Scots' final home match of the year.
ÂÂ
Western New England's second and third doubles teams proved to be difficult opponents to put away. Tawnie Yeaw and Lily Drescher jumped out to an early lead over
Linda Mustafa and
Lindsey Brudvig, but the latter Golden Bears No. 2 duo battled back to draw the match to 6-5. Yeaw and Drescher, however, won two of the final three games to eke out Gordon's second point of the day. At No. 3, WNE's
Kelly Byrnes and
Juliette Cormier fought Dillon and Dupre in a tough 8-6 defeat.
ÂÂ
Dupre was forced to fight off a tough first-set loss, 7-5, to Byrnes at No. 5 singles, won the second set 6-1 and then took the match in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-7.
At No. 3 singles, freshman
Joeanna Glantz made Drescher labor through a long straight-set match at 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
