Kevin Cook Climbs on WNE All-Time Scoring Chart in NEFC Loss to MIT, 17-14

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior running back Kevin Cook rushed for a career-high 164 yards and jumped three spots on the school's all-time scoring list on Saturday, but it wasn't enough for Western New England in a 17-14 New England Football Conference loss at the hands of MIT at Golden Bear Stadium. The visiting Engineers improve to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in the NEFC standings, while the Golden Bears fall to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Cook had touchdown runs of 15- and 1-yards to give him 168 career points to surpass Mike Laroche (158 from 2001-04), Steve Carroll (160, 1992-95) and Justin Walz (162, 2006-09) for third place in WNE history. Jordan Capitanio (2005-08) is ranked No. 2 with 244 points.

Samuel Inman caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from Peter Williams to help MIT regain the lead for good at the 9:47 mark of the fourth quarter, and after the defense held the Golden Bears to a 3-and-out the Engineers offense held the ball for the final 8 minutes and 43 seconds to run out the clock to secure their second consecutive victory in conference play.

After trailing 10-0 in the third quarter, WNE got on the scoreboard at the 12:30 mark as Cook ran into the end zone from 15 yards out to cap an 8-play, 65-yard drive in 2:30 time of possession.

Western New England got the ball right back in terrific field position after the defense forced the MIT offense into a 3-and-out that ended with just a 26-yard punt against the wind, downing the punt at the MIT 48.

Just 3:01 after cutting the deficit to 10-7, Cook gave the Golden Bears their only lead of the contest with a 1-yard plunge to go up 14-10 at the 9:29 of the third. Alejandro Colon had 16 of his 22 yards on one rush down to the MIT 12, setting up Cook's TD.

Cook carried 31 times. He now has 2,361 yards in his career to approach the No. 4 spot on the school's all-time rushing chart.

Quarterback Peter Williams led the MIT offense with 287 yards passing on 26 completions in 39 attempts, including the eventual game-winning throw to Inman that was a 12-play, 90-yard drive. Justin Wallace added 103 yards on the ground in 28 attempts--one of which a 9-yard TD run on the Engineers opening drive of the first quarter. The score at 12:24 on the clock capped a 7-play, 61-yard drive.

The three-point loss snapped the Golden Bears' four-game win streak in the series.

Western New England sophomore linebacker Nathan Fleming tied a career-high with 17 tackles to lead all players, followed by Kenny Strecker and Blair Cook with nine apiece.

Jake Laux, with 16 stops, and Cameron Wagar's 10 helped the MIT defense limit the NEFC's top offense to 269 total yards, or 203 below its season average.

The Golden Bears conclude a season-long three-game homestand next Saturday to face NEFC opponent Curry, beginning at 1 p.m. in Golden Bear Stadium. The Senior Day contest will be billed as Take-A-Kid-to-the-Game, and the team will be collecting Toys for Tots.
