Musa Elsir, 10, but Western New England couldn't solve Matt Vadas as the Golden Bears fell to host Connecticut College, 92-69, on Sunday to conclude the Camels Coaches Versus Cancer Tournament. The Golden Bears fall to 0-2 on the season while CC is 1-1.
Western New England shot a respectable 45.5 percent (25-55) from the floor, but struggled from long range (3-for-15) and at the free throw line (16-for-32). Connecticut College was better in all three phases at 54.1 (33-61), 51.7 (15-29) and 73.3 (11-15).
Rinaldi, who averaged 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the field, represented the Golden Bears on the all-tournament team.
Vadas led all players with 33 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 11 of 17 from the field that included 7-for-11 on 3-pointers.
A Musa lay-in with 6 minutes and 57 seconds left in the first half gave WNE a 24-22 lead.
But Bo McKinley nailed a trey 1:17 later to ignite a 23-9 run as CC took a 45-33 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Golden Bears' offense couldn't get on track and CC built as much as a 25-point cushion.
The Golden Bears outscored the Camels in the paint 28-24, but the CC bench had a huge advantage over the WNE reserves, 40-13.
Senior
Nick DeFeo chipped in nine points and four assists for WNE.
Bard defeated Suffolk 85-75 in today's championship game, and Lamar Powell was named the tourney's Most Outstanding Player. Bard teammate Alex Fabean-Scott also placed on the all-tournament team. Other selections were Suffolk's Sam Nwadike and Matt Powers, and Rob Harrigan for the Camels joining Rinaldi.
Western New England continues its four-game road swing to start the season on Tuesday (7 p.m.) at crosstown, non-conference rival Springfield.
