PORTSMOUTH, R.I.--Junior co-captains
John Kelly and
Brian Prost combined for six points and
Brandon Stroud recorded four alone, including the game-winning goal, as Western New England earned a come-from-behind 6-4 victory at Salve Regina in Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast men's hockey action at Abbey Rink on Sunday evening. The Golden Bears improve to 10-13 on the season, including 7-5 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Seahawks dip to 7-12-3 overall and 4-6-2 in the league.
Stroud, who had three assists, broke a 4-4 tie with his team-best 13th goal of the season with 7 minutes and 59 seconds remaining in the game. Kelly added an empty-net goal with 47 seconds left to cap a wild night in which WNE overcame a pair of three-goal deficits.
Salve Regina built a 4-1 advantage on Michael Naso's power-play marker midway through the second period.
But
Matt Dore cut the deficit in half with a power-play tally at the 18:40 mark to spark a run of five unanswered goals by the Golden Bears, who were outshot 46 to 24 for the game.
To start the scoring in the third period, defenseman
Eric Gethers pulled WNE to within 4-3 just 2:37 after Dore's goal and then Kelly scored his second of the game at the midway point to make it 4-all.
Despite getting outshot 20 to 4 in the opening 20 minutes, Western New England almost escaped the first period unscathed. However, SRU took advantage of a failed WNE clear to get the puck out of its zone and John Scorcia made it 1-0 on a feed from Marc Biggs with only 2 seconds showing on the clock. Western New England goalie
Eric Sorenson was a big reason SRU led only 1-0 going into the first intermission, stopping 19 of 20 shots at that point.
In the second period, SRU went up 3-0 on goals by Naso and Kenny Craig 2:01 apart.
Prost finished with three assists, Kelly recorded a hat trick and defenseman
Rance Vukovic contributed a pair of assists.
Western New England went 2-for-6 on the power play while SRU was 2-for-5.
Sorenson ended up with 42 saves.
