WENHAM, Mass.--Western New England senior co-captain
Laura Madaio smashed two home runs and drove in six in a 9-0, 5-inning victory in game two on Saturday, capping the Golden Bears doubleheader sweep of Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action at Scots Field. The visiting Golden Bears improve to 17-12 overall and 8-2 in the CCC, including a 4-1 victory in the opener, while the Scots dip to 7-18 and 2-8.
In the first game, Western New England junior leadoff batter
Maria Francese was the only player on either side that had multiple hits.
With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the second, sophomore
Samantha Mulhern scored an unearned run on a passed ball to give the Golden Bears the lead for good. Freshman
Alexis Bukowski gave WNE an insurance run with a RBI-single to cap the two-run frame.
Sophomore
Lauren Zambrano (12-4) was efficient in the circle, pitching a complete game. Zambrano tossed a three-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks allowed, giving up just a run.
Then in the second outing, Madaio homered with a runner aboard as part of a three-run first inning and belted a grand slam to highlight a six-run fifth to put the game away.
Francese went 3-for-3, including a RBI-triple, and two runs scored.

Leah Torre (4-6) picked up the win, combining with sophomore
Carolyn Hajdusek for the shutout.
