Western New England Flexes Muscles in 70-57 CCC Win at Curry to Run Win Streak to Three

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--Junior wing Musa Elsir led four Golden Bears in double figures with a game-high 21 points, and senior post Dennis Rinaldi added 15 points and equaled a season high with 18 rebounds, as Western New England earned a 70-57 victory Wednesday over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Colonels Student Center Gymnasium. Western New England won its third-straight to improve to 6-11 on the season, including a 4-7 CCC mark, while the Colonels slip to 4-14 and 3-8 in the conference.

The 57 points allowed represents an opponent low for the Golden Bears this season, who also had a season's best eight blocked shots led by Rinaldi and sophomore forward Zack Askew with three apiece.

Antonio Jones and Lambros Papalambros paced the hosts with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Papalambros also contributed team bests of three assists and four steals. Senior Thomas McLean pulled down a team-best nine boards.

Senior guards Nick DeFeo added 15 points and Ryan Mickiewicz had 10 for the Golden Bears, who shot 38.2 percent from the field (21-55) and 66.7 percent at the free throw line (21-31).

Western New England was able to offset a bad shooting night and overcome a 22-5 points-off-turnovers-disadvantage by dominating the glass, outrebounding Curry 55 to 42. The Golden Bears pulled down 19 on the offensive end that produced 23 second-chance points. In addition, the WNE defense held the Colonels to a 27.1 field goal percentage (19-70).

Rinaldi notched his team-leading eighth double-double, DeFeo hauled down nine rebounds, and Elsir grabbed eight rebounds.

WNE took its biggest lead of the first half at 21-14 after Elsir hit a layup with 8:14 on the clock. Curry answered with a 13-0 run to take a 27-21 lead with 4:11 left. The run was started after Jones hit a pair from the charity stripe and capped off with a 3-pointer by Papalambros. The Golden Bears, however, closed out the half with an 11-2 run of their own, claiming a three-point halftime lead of 32-29, keyed by a DeFeo lay-in and ended on a Rinaldi bucket in the paint.

Senior Kevin Wilkes (5 points, 6 rebounds) converted a layup to give WNE a four-point edge, 51-47, with 6:53 remaining in the contest, as the Golden Bears came back from a 43-37 deficit in the second half. Jones scored the next four points to knot the game at 51-51 with 4:55 on the clock. The Golden Bears would go on to score 19 of the game's final 25 points, triggered by a pair of DeFeo free throws, to seal the win.

Both teams return to CCC action on Saturday at 3 p.m., as WNE hosts Roger Williams and Curry travels to Eastern Nazarene.
