Turnovers Stump Golden Bears on the Road Against Curry College in CCC Action, 59-43

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--The Western New England University women's basketball team had a terrific night on the glass but couldn't overcome its ball control in a 59-43 Commonwealth Coast Conference defeat at Curry College on Wednesday at the Colonels Student Center. The Golden Bears fall to 7-10 on the season and 4-7 in the CCC, while Curry improves to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

Graduate student Nicole Daly led Western New England with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Freshman Paige Young recorded a game-high 10 rebounds, while also chipping in with eight points.

Curry junior Kylie Beltz led all scorers with 20 points. Senior Ashley Assarian added 14 points and a game-high seven steals, while sophomore Shannon Griffith pulled down a team-best seven boards.

Western New England outrebounded Curry 42-31, including a 20-9 margin on the offensive end that generated 16 second-chance points for the Golden Bears. The WNE bench also outscored Curry 16 to 9.

The Golden Bears, however, struggled to keep possession with a season-high 27 turnovers, which produced 24 free points for the Colonels. Curry turned the ball over 18 times that resulted in 15 points for WNE.

Western New England made 13 of 50 field goal attempts for 26.0 percent while Curry 20-for-52 at 38.5 percent. The Colonels were nearly perfect at the free throw line, missing just once in 14 tries. The Golden Bears made 13 of 20 free throw attempts.

Curry--which never trailed--opened the first frame on a 16-2 run over the first 5 minutes and 32 seconds of play, started after Beltz converted a layup and which was later capped off after Griffith made a layup with 15:28 on the clock. With 2:29 left, WNE cut the deficit to three at 25-22 after Daly sank a three-pointer. The Colonels answered with a 5-0 run to take a 30-22 edge at halftime.

In the second half, Curry stretched the lead to 21 after sophomore Kerry White converted a three-point play with 11:40 left in the game. The Golden Bears pulled to within 15 (50-35) after Young hit a jump shot 4 minutes later.

Both teams return to CCC action on Saturday at 1 p.m., as Curry will travel to Eastern Nazarene and the Golden Bears host Roger Williams in their breast cancer awareness contest.
