LONGMEADOW, Mass.--The Western New England University women's tennis team battled Gordon College through the doubles competition of their Commonwealth Coast Conference match on Wednesday at the Grand Meadows Tennis Club, but the visiting Fighting Scots were able to pull away during singles on the way to an 8-1 victory.
Western New England falls below the .500-mark for the first time all season at 5-6, including 2-5 in the CCC. Gordon, meanwhile, improves to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The match's venue was moved indoors from the Volvo Outdoor Courts on the WNE campus due to wet surface and threat of showers all day.
Freshman
Holly Nelson picked up the Golden Bears' lone point with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Liann Van Volkinburg at No. 6 singles, improving to 2-1 at the position.

Gordon picked up five of the six points in singles. Yeaw, Linnell, Drescher, Caron and Moran won their matches at No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively, to make them double winners on the afternoon.
Western New England will have a short turnaround as it travels Thursday to West Hartford, Conn., to square off against non-conference opponent University of Saint Joseph.
