Western New England Climbs Back to .500 after 7-2 Victory at Univ. of Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.--The Western New England University women's tennis team climbed back to the .500-mark after a convincing 7-2 non-conference win Thursday at the University of Saint Joseph, improving the Golden Bears' record to 6-6 on the season. The host Blue Jays, meanwhile, see their four-match home winning streak snapped to drop to 6-4 overall.

Western New England jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after sweeping the doubles competition. The No. 1 tandem of sophomore Joeanna Glantz and freshman Lauren Sell cruised past Rebecca Mauri/Meghan Toth, 8-3. Freshman Christina D'Agostino and junior co-captain Kelly Byrnes had a tussle with Amanda Willhoft/Emely Chenard at No. 2, but prevailed by an 8-6 score. At No. 3, freshmen Jessica Breitweg and Alice Mathews routed Lisa Wawrzynowski/Monica Palmieri, 8-1.

Glantz left little doubt that the Golden Bears would win the match after sweeping her No. 2 singles match over Wawrzynowski, 6-0, 6-2.

In addition to Glantz, Sell was a double winner for WNE. Sell came back to defeat Mauri 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-7) in their No. 1 singles meeting.

In other singles action, St. Louis was victorious at No. 5 singles over Serena Sundara, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). At No. 6, senior co-captain Michele Magliulo and Tara Smith split the first two sets with the former winning 7-6 (8-6) and the latter taking 6-3 before Magliulo took the decisive frame 6-4.

Toth and Chenard gave the Blue Jays their two points at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Toth won her match in comeback fashion against D'Agostino 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-7) while Chenard took her outing from Byrnes, 6-3, 6-0.

Western New England will have its fall finale at noon Saturday hosting Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.
