SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University closed its men's tennis fall schedule with a tough 6-3 non-conference loss at Springfield College's Appleton Courts on Friday, heading into its traditional spring season with a 1-1 overall record.
Senior co-captain
John Mindek was a double winner for the visiting Golden Bears, teaming up with classmate
Greg Tischofer for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Cameron Grant and Cody Rodrigues and then winning his No. 6 singles match in straight sets over Rodrigues, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
Springfield managed to take a 2-1 lead after doubles. Western New England's No. 1 team of juniors
Andres Otero and
Alexander Sause lost a heartbreaker to Tanner DeVarennes/Justin Danielewicz, 9-8 with a 7-5 tiebreaker in a match that could have given WNE the 2-1 advantage instead.
Senior
Peter LeFrancois earned WNE's other point with a No. 4 singles triumph against Joshua Robinson, 7-6 (12-10), 6-1.
Western New England also gave Springfield all it could handle in two other singles matches as Sause was nipped 7-5, 7-5 by Justin Danielewicz and junior
Adam Zimmerman fell to Grant in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Up next for WNE is the spring schedule, which will be formally announced at a later date.
