LOWELL, Mass.--Western New England lost a 5-1 decision Sunday at Wentworth in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast men's hockey game at the Tsongas Arena, falling to 9-11 on the season and 3-6 in the league. The Leopards, meanwhile, are 9-10-2 overall and moved to within one point of first place Nichols in the ECAC Northeast standings at 7-3 with their sixth straight conference win.
Senior captain
Brian Prost scored the Golden Bears' lone goal in the first period to cut into Wentworth's lead to 2-1 as the teams stayed that way after 20 minutes. Prost's team-leading 10th tally of the season came with 4 minutes and 54 seconds remaining in the first by following up on junior assistant captain's
Brandon Stroud shot.
Joe Mottiqua led a balanced Leopards offense with a goal and an assist as eight teammates recorded at least one point.
After freshman Connor Crowe scored his first collegiate goal at the 5:06 mark of the second period to put Wentworth up 3-1, WNE had a golden opportunity to get back in the game when Beau Burgau was whistled for a 5-minute major boarding penalty with 2:48 left on the scoreboard clock. The Leopards, however, were able to shut down the league's second-ranked power-play unit as WNE couldn't score on four shots on goal.
Wentworth killed off all four WNE man-advantage opportunities and is 27 for the last 27 on the penalty-kill. The Golden Bears gave up one power-play goal in three man-disadvantages.
Wentworth outshot WNE by a 40-24 margin for the contest. Senior
Eric Sorenson made 35 saves in the WNE goal while his counterpart Alex Peck stopped 23 Golden Bears shots.
Mottiqua put the hosts on the board at the 5:32 mark of the opening frame when he put home a rebound of a sophomore Adam Frank shot. Then almost 8 minutes later, Mike Domsodi scored what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Western New England hosts Suffolk on Thursday in another ECAC Northeast tilt, and Wentworth has its final regular-season home contest on Tuesday as the Leopards host Nichols at Tsongas Arena.
