Western New England Splits Identical 4-0 Results on Opening Day of NTC Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEOLA, Fla.--The Western New England University softball team opened the season at the 2014 National Training Center Spring Games on Saturday, falling to Western Connecticut State University (2-3 overall pending today's result against Oswego State) 4-0 before coming back to down Bates College (1-4) by an identical score.

Against the Colonials, the WNE offense was shut down by sophomore pitcher Alle Sabith as junior Samantha Mulhern and freshman Corianna DeLisi each had only a single.

But in the four-run victory over the Bobcats, the Golden Bears got a pitching gem of their own on the arm of sophomore Heidi Grieger who threw a complete-game shutout while limiting BC to a pair of singles. Grieger retired the last 10 hitters she faced.

Western New England sophomore Alexis Bukowski knocked in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly. Senior tri-captain Maria Francese, freshman Gabby Lavinio and DeLisi paced the offense with two hits apiece.

Western New England continues the NTC Spring Games tomorrow against McDaniel College (5 p.m.) and Carroll University (7 p.m.).

More details to come later and boxscores will be posted when they become available.
