CLERMONT, Fla.--The Western New England University softball team was blanked twice Wednesday at the 2014 National Training Center Dot Richardson Spring Games at Hancock Park, falling to Rowan University, 4-0, and the University of Southern Maine, 2-0. The Golden Bears now stand at 3-5 overall while the Profs improve to 8-4 and the Huskies are 2-6.
Against the Profs, senior tri-captain
Maria Francese led WNE with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Pinch-hitter
Lauren Zambrano added a double and junior
Jocelyn Agnelli and freshman
Gabby Lavinio also had a hit apiece.
Leading 1-0 after five innings, Rowan broke open what was a tightly-contested game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Zambrano was the tough-luck loser versus the Huskies, who pushed across a run in both the fifth and seventh frames.
Western New England outhit USM by a 6 to 5 count.
The Golden Bears will conclude NTC action in the Sunshine State on Thursday with a split-doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut State University (9 a.m.) and Bowdoin College (11 a.m.).
