SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The junior duo of
Peter LeFrancois and
John Mindek each were part of two victories to lead the Western New England University men's tennis team to a 6-3 victory Saturday over visiting Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. The Golden Bears rise to 7-6 on the season, including a 3-2 CCC mark, while the Scots slip to 5-11 and 1-4 in the conference.
LeFrancois teamed with junior co-captain
PJ Nassar for a No. 2 doubles win over Joe Daugherty/Dan Christensen, 8-2, and Mindek combined with classmate
Greg Tischofer for a No. 3 doubles triumph against Richie Armand/Daniel Dufoe, 8-6. Western New England went into the singles round up 2-1.
LeFrancois picked up a No. 3 singles win in a tough three sets over Daugherty, 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 to close the match.
Sophomore
Andres Otero defeated Kenny Gaudio 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to give the Golden Bears a commanding 5-3 lead.
Zach Hall had tied the match for Gordon at 2-2 when he pinned a No. 1 singles loss on sophomore
Alexander Sause, 6-3, 6-0, before Mindek put WNE back on top after making quick work of Daniel Alvarado, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Scots drew even again 3-3 after a No. 4 singles win by Armand over senior co-captain
Tyler Unwin, 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore
Adam Zimmerman clinched the victory for the Golden Bears with a No. 5 singles win, 6-3, 6-3.
'Today was a very good win for us against a good team," said Western New England coach Jennifer Kolins. "We have been very consistent in our effort and strategic match play. I am proud of how focused this team is on and off the court every day."
