Lauren Zambrano Propels Western New England in CCC Split at Roger Williams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I.-Junior pitcher Lauren Zambrano helped her own cause with a 3-for-4, 4-runs batted in performance at the plate and threw a two-hitter from the circle to help Western New England take a 6-1 victory over Roger Williams in its Commonwealth Coast Conference softball opener, but the hosts came back in the nightcap, 10-0 in five innings, to salvage a split on Wednesday. As a result, the Golden Bears are now 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the CCC while the Hawks stand 9-9 and 4-2.

In the opener, Zambrano earned the compete-game win behind eight strikeouts and she allowed no earned runs on two hits and three walks. She slammed a two-run homer to left center for a 3-0 lead in the third inning and knocked in two runs with a double to the same spot in the fourth to make it 5-0.

Senior tri-captain Maria Francese and freshman Gabby Lavinio joined Zambrano with three hits apiece as the Golden Bears churned out 14 as a team.

Roger Williams got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on an unearned run after a dropped fly ball that would have ended the frame. Veronica Alicea spoiled Zambrano's no-hit bid with a double in the fifth and Delaney Burns had a single to lead off the seventh.

Errors hurt WNE in the second game as three miscues led to seven unearned runs that the Hawks scored in the first. Burns started the big inning with a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 lead and RWU never trailed.

Samantha Mittel and pitcher Tori Milano led the Hawks with two hits and two RBI apiece, and Meredith Moise also had two hits.

Freshman pinch-hitter Kacey Dory, freshman catcher Corianna DeLisi, sophomore Tara Cabral and Zambrano accounted for the Golden Bears four hits.

Western New England turns right back around on Wednesday (3 p.m.) for a non-conference doubleheader at Westfield State.
