Western New England Splits with CCC Preseason Favorite Endicott in Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior pitcher Lauren Zambrano accounted for all of the offense as Western New England won the second game, 3-2, of a Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader against Endicott at Golden Bear Softball Park on Saturday. The Gulls (10-4 overall, 3-1 CCC), who are favored to win the CCC championship in the preseason coaches' poll, won the opener by a 2-1 score. The Golden Bears now stand at 6-10 on the season, including 2-2 in the conference standings, after finally making their home debut in 2014.

Zambrano helped her own cause in the bottom of the third inning when she blasted her second home run of the season just over the top of the fence in left-center field. Junior Jocelyn Agnelli and senior tri-captain Maria Francese both scored on the play after connecting for back-to-back singles to set up Zambrano's team-leading runs batted in 8, 9 and 10. Zambrano also singled in the first.

Zambrano struck out six and worked around three walks and four hits in the complete-game win to improve to 3-5. Katherine Clark (1-2) also went the distance for Endicott, allowing four hits and a walk to go along with three strikeouts.

Endicott chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh to cut the deficit to the final 3-2 score. Emily Hoffman lifted a sacrifice fly to center for the first run and Jess Linden had an RBI-single. The Gulls continued to threaten in their final at-bats with a run already in and runners at first and second base, but Zambrano got Jesse Bilafer to fly to left field for the final out.

Both teams had four hits.

In the first contest, Endicott got all the offense it needed with two runs in the top of the first inning. After Bilafer led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Alex Moise, Hoffman doubled to right field to bring home Bilafer. Cleanup hitter Sam DiBella then followed with another double for an important insurance run scored by Hoffman.

Western New England scored its only run in the fifth when Zambrano doubled down the left field line to bring home freshman Corianna DeLisi, who led off with a single to center.

The Golden Bears outhit the Gulls 6-5, but stranded eight runners on base. The first two hitters reached in the first, but didn't come around to score. Western New England left the bases loaded with one out in the fourth, but couldn't capitalize. It also had a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but the potential game-tying run couldn't come around to force extra frames.

Agnelli led the Golden Bears with two hits and freshman Gabby Lavinio had a double.

Heidi Grieger (1-4) took the hard-luck loss after throwing a complete game in which she scattered five hits. Nell O'Connor (5-0) got the win that included four strikeouts.

Western New England travels to Biddeford, Maine, tomorrow for a 2 p.m. CCC twinbill at University of New England. The first game was originally slated to start at noon.
