Wild Comeback in Seventh Inning Salvages Split at UNE in CCC Softball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BIDDEFORD, Maine--Sophomore Heather Fecteau had a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh inning to propel Western New England University to a split of its Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader at University of New England on Sunday at Claude Dubois Field, winning the second game, 7-5, in dramatic fashion. The host Nor'easters took the opener by a 4-1 score. Visiting Western New England now stands at 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the CCC, while UNE is 13-9 and 5-3.

Western New England sent 10 batters to the plate in its last at-bat, scoring five times on five hits to erase a 5-2 deficit. Junior Emily Mastropaolo sparked the comeback with a lead-off double to the gap in left-center. Two batters later, sophomore Alexis Bukowski drove in pinch-runner Kacey Dory with a single to center field to pull the Golden Bears within 5-3. Junior Samantha Mulhern followed with a single to left field to load the bases and set up Fecteau with her heroic hit--her only one of the game--to deep left-center. Senior tri-captain Maria Francese capped the rally by driving home Tara Cabral, who pinch-ran for Fecteau, from third base on an error.

Francese and Mastropaolo each had three hits to lead WNE's 15-hit attack. Senior tri-captain Katie Eckert and Mulhern both added two.

Amanda Vaudreuil, Adrienne Chase and Ali Stanley all had two hits apiece among eight for the Nor'easters, who had scored three times on three hits and two costly WNE errors in the bottom of the sixth for a seemingly comfortable 5-2 lead. Amanda Vallante capped the rally with a RBI-single.

Sophomore Heidi Grieger (2-4) got the win in relief, allowing no earned runs (3 total) and two walks while scattering four hits in five innings of work.

In the second game, Sydney Helmbrecht delivered a two-run single up the middle for a 3-1 UNE lead in the fourth inning and tacked on an insurance tally on a Helmbrecht RBI-double down the right field line two frames later.

Trailing 1-0 to begin the fourth, WNE knotted the score on a double to left-center field by Eckert that plated Francese. Francese had led off with an infield single to third base and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Lauren Zambrano. Eckert also singled and finished with two hits.

Jessica Potter joined Helmbrecht with two hits apiece as UNE produced eight to WNE's six.

Western New England is back on the diamond on Tuesday (3 p.m.) in Quincy, Mass., to take on CCC opponent Eastern Nazarene in a doubleheader that was previously scheduled for March 28.
