Kelly Byrnes won her doubles match on her Senior Day celebration as the Western New England women's tennis team blanked visiting Curry 9-0 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest during Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 3).
Byrne teamed with
Christina D'Agostino for an 8-3 victory at the number two flight. D'Agostino also took her number three singles match by the score of 3-6, 6-1, and 6-4.
"Kelly has been a tremendous asset to our program during her time at WNE. She has been a significant contributor on the court, a leader on our campus and has achieved excellence in the classroom. As we honor her in her last regular season match today, I look forward to watching the continued impact that she will have through the course of our winter and spring seasons," said Coach Jennifer Kolins.Lauren Sell led four players who captured their singles matches in straight sets by taking a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the number one position. Joeanna Glantz posted an 8-5 decision at the top doubles spot. Glantz posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at the second singles flight.
Western New England clinched a winning season with a 6 -4 record while finishing fifth in the conference with a 4-4 mark.
The Golden Bears will meet fourth-seeded Nichols at 2:00 pm next Tuesday (Oct. 6) in a first-round match of the CCC Championship
The Colonels, who have two matches left, fall to 3-10 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
