Golden Bears Fall to Southern Maine, 11-2, and Saint Lawrence, 3-2, at NTC Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEOLA, Fla.--The Western New England University softball team lost both games on Monday to the University of Southern Maine, 11-2, and St. Lawrence University, 3-2, at the 2015 National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games (Field #2). The Golden Bears fall to 2-4 on the season.

In the nightcap, Western New England outhit the SLU Saints 9 to 7 but left nine runners on base in its third one-run defeat this week already.

Senior Grace Kucharski and juniors Alexis Bukowski, McKenzie Pezze had two hits apiece to lead the Golden Bears.

The Saints overcame a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brady Cooper scored on a fielding error after Emma Reakes singled up the middle and Kelsey Murphy delivered a go-ahead two-run double to left center.

Western New England was able to get one run back in the seventh when Kucharski had a RBI-single to left field with two outs. The Golden Bears still had runners at first and second, but SLU pitcher Kyle Plimpton got Bukowski to ground out to end the game without further damage. Plimpton got the win by scattering nine hits, three walks and she had six strikeouts.

Pezze gave WNE a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth with a RBI-single to right-center field.

Junior Heidi Grieger pitched well in going the distance, allowing no earned runs and scattering seven hits.

Western New England will take in the sights around Central Florida on Tuesday and resume its NTC schedule on Wednesday against Massachusetts College (5 p.m.) and Plattsburgh State (7 p.m.) in Clermont.
