SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University men's tennis team made quick work of an undermanned Curry College squad in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday, blanking the visiting Colonels 9-0 at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. The host Golden Bears won their second match in a row, both at home.
Western New England took advantage of three forfeits at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles to grab three points.
At No. 1 doubles, senior tri-captain
PJ Nassar and junior
Andres Otero teamed up to edge Charlie Paltsios/Nick Poulack, 8-5. The junior tandem of
Alexander Sause and
Adam Zimmerman cruised past Andrew Hegarty/Jonathon Schutzman, 8-1, as the Golden Bears led 3-0 going into the singles round.
Sause had a thrilling comeback win at No. 1 singles over Paltsios. After losing the first set 7-6, Sause stormed back to take the second 6-1 and then won the match after earning a 10-4 win in the super tiebreaker.
Western New England went on to capture three singles matches in straight sets, including Otero at No. 2, senior
Chris Spear at No. 3 and classmate/tri-captain
Greg Tischofer at No. 4.
The Golden Bears return to the courts against CCC rival Endicott next Wednesday, April 8, at 3:30 p.m., marking the end of a three-match homestand.
