Western New England Uses Long Ball to Propel Past Trinity (Conn.) in Non-CCC Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University hit three home runs in a 6-0 Game 1 win on its way to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over visiting Trinity College (Conn.) at Golden Bear Softball Park on Tuesday. The Golden Bears also took the second game, 9-7, to win their fifth game in a row while improving to 24-7 on the season. The visiting Bantams drop to 6-21 overall.

Sophomore Corianna DeLisi and senior tri-captain Emily Mastropaolo hit solo shots in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, and senior Grace Kucharski capped the scoring with a three-run blast over the fence in left-center field.

Junior Heidi Grieger picked up her 11th win of the season, going the distance, while scattering five hits and striking out six batters to equal her career high. Junior McKenzie Pezze picked up two hits and drove in a run, and classmate Alexis Bukowski notched a hit and a run scored.

Erica Quinones had two of the Bantams' five singles.

Pezze doubled home Bukowski in the second inning to give the Golden Bears an early 1-0 lead. Trinity's starter Hannah King silenced the Golden Bears' bats until the fifth, when DeLisi took her deep for her third homer to extend the lead to 2-0.

Grieger continued to show brilliance in the circle, pitching a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and allowing her offense to go to back to work. Mastropaolo led the inning off by crushing a solo homer to left-center field, increasing the lead to three runs. Pezze, then, singled to right-center and senior Jocelyn Agnelli advanced her to second on a single of her own. Kucharski came to the plate as a pinch hitter, and drove the first pitch she saw over the left-center field wallâ€"putting the game out of reach with a six-run cushion.

Griegerâ€"seeking a complete gameâ€"came out for the seventh and surrendered three quick hits by Meaghan Race, Quinones and Katharine Haghdan to load the bases with one out. But Grieger got Miranda Riendeau and Cassia Armstrong to strike out swinging to escape the jam and secure the win.

Reigning CCC Player of the Week and senior second baseman Samantha Mulhern (2 runs scored) and Kucharski both picked up three hits. Kucharski drove in three runs and scored one in the nightcap.

Senior Lauren Zambrano battled through 6-1/3 innings, getting five strikeouts, to notch her 13th victory of the season in the second game. Grieger secured the final two outs, picking up her first save of the season--one of just two CCC pitchers to do that this spring.

After giving up an early run as Race scored on a wild pitch, the Golden Bears offensive attack plated four runs in the first inning and two in the second. Kucharski singled down the right field line, which scored two runners, giving the Golden Bears a comfortable 6-1 lead.

Trinity scored four runs in the third on a two-RBI double by Riendeau to left center and Alex Hnat two-RBI single down the right field line, cutting the deficit to 6-5.

But the Golden Bears rebounded in fourth, pushing three runs across. Bukowski singled home a run and Kucharski kept her red-hot hitting upâ€"doubling down the line, scoring Fecteau and Mulhern. Pezze knocked in Bukowski, giving the Golden Bears a 9-5 lead for insurance

Western New England outhit Trinity 15 to 11 in the nightcap. Sophomore Gabby Lavinio, Bukowski and Fecteau added two hits apiece for the Golden Bears. Quinones went 3-for-4 for the Bantams, followed by two hits each from Race, Paolo Otero and Hnat.

Western New England is scheduled to end the regular season on Friday at crosstown rival Springfield College for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
