SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Visiting Nichols College swept the singles action en route to an 8-1 victory Saturday over Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's tennis action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. The Bison improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCC, while the Golden Bears drop to 1-3 and 0-3.
Sophomores
Jessica Breitweg and
Alice Mathews won at No. 3 doubles to account for Western New England's lone point as Nichols held a slim 2-1 lead going into the singles competition. They defeated Emma Carey/Michelle Keklik in an 8-6 thriller.
But four Bison won their singles matches to make them double winners that led NC to the victory. Lauren Candia defeated
Lauren Sell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, Cristina Szepanski downed
Joeanna Glantz 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, Ashley Dallaire swept
Christina D'Agostino 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, and Daniela Saldarriaga edged
Holly Nelson 6-3, 3-6, 10-1 at No. 4.
Candia and Dallaire beat Sell and Glantz in No. 1 doubles, 8-3, and Szepanski and Saldarriaga tripped up D'Agostino and
Kelly Byrnes at No. 2 by that identical score.
Breitweg and
Petra Martinelli lost tough 6-2, 7-5 decisions at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to Carey and Tiffany Romano.
Western New England will continue its conference schedule on Wednesday at Salve Regina in Newport, R.I.
