NEWPORT, R.I.--Junior co-captain Joeanna Glantz won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets to clinch a 5-4 win Wednesday for the visiting Western New England University women's tennis team over Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at the Leroy Avenue courts. With the win, the Golden Bears snap a three-match losing streak to improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in the conference. The Seahawks drop to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the CCC.

Glantz defeated Emma Gruber 6-3, 6-4 to give Western New England a commanding 5-2 lead at the time.

The Golden Bears led the match 2-1 after the doubles competition. Sophomores Jessica Breitweg and Alice Mathews doubled up Courtney Bailey/Cristina Marsocci, 8-4, at No. 3 and senior co-captain Kelly Byrnes teamed with sophomore Christina D'Agostino to repel Taylor Amendola/Caroline Rodman, 8-5, at No. 2. Salve cut the deficit in half as the No. 1 tandem of Emma Gruber/Kasey Walther edged Glantz and sophomore Lauren Sell in a 9-7 thriller.

The teams split the six singles matches as WNE won at Nos. 1, 2 and 4. Sell defeated Walther, 7-5, 6-2., at No. 1, Glantz was the clincher at No. 2 and sophomore Holly Nelson swept Courtney Bailey, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 4. Nelson trailed 5-2 in the first set, but reeled off the next 11 games to get the win.

Western New England returns home to the Volvo Outdoor courts at noon Saturday when it hosts Eastern Nazarene.
