Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. (January 30, 2016) - Senior Luis Agrait (South Hadley, Mass.) and junior Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) combined for 33 points, but Roger Williams University pulled away in the second half for an 83-66 victory over Western New England University this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action at the Campus Rec Center.
Western New England, which trailed by just two (40-38) at halftime, saw its deficit reach seven (51-44) five minutes into the second half on a layup by senior Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.), and eventually 13 (68-55) midway through the frame when sophomore Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) connected from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears pulled to within seven on two occasions after that point, but got no closer as Roger Williams put the game out of reach late.Â
Agrait finished with a team-high 17 points, ten of which came at the free throw line, while Gelineau posted a 16-point effort on 4-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-6 effort from three-point distance to go with a 6-of-8 showing at the charity stripe. Freshman guard Mikey Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) added seven points, four assists and three rebounds, while senior Don Stephens (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior Keegan Dudeck (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in with six points each.Â
Junior guard Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) led four Hawks in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, while McCourt finished with 14 points and Jennings and sophomore Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) added 12 each.Â
Gelineau opened the scoring with a dunk 13 seconds into the contest, but Roger Williams answered with a 12-0 run that included a pair of Wasik triples to take an early ten-point lead. Consecutive three-pointers by Stephens and freshman Tyler Johnson (Vernon, Conn.) had the Golden Bears back within four (17-13) at the 11:37 mark, while an Agrait trey with just under four minutes left in the half cut the Roger Williams lead to two (32-30).
Western New England regained the lead on its next possession as Dudeck knocked down one of his two three-pointers, but an 8-5 Roger Williams run over the remainder of the half restored the Hawks' two-point advantage at the break.Â
The Golden Bears shot 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the field overall, and were limited to a 25 percent clip (6-of-24) in the second half. Roger Williams turned in a 52 percent (26-of-50) shooting performance, connecting on 13-of-25 field goals and 5-of-11 three-pointers in each half.Â
