BOSTON, Mass. (January 30, 2016) - The Suffolk University ice hockey team snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of second period goals on its way to a 4-2 victory over Western New England University this evening in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.ÂÂ
Freshman Tyler Hines (North Haven, Conn.) and junior Josh Twietmeyer (Weston, Fla.) each found the back of the net for the Golden Bears, while sophomore goaltender Scott Brown (Sewickley, Pa.) made a game-high 34 saves in his first start of the season between the pipes.ÂÂ
Freshman Nick Mosher (Cumming, Ga.) staked the Rams to a 1-0 advantage just 50 seconds after the opening faceoff, and Hines equalized for Western New England seven minutes later on a feed from freshman defenseman Joe Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who was making his collegiate debut for the Golden Bears.ÂÂ
Suffolk pulled back ahead with a pair of second period tallies, however, as sophomore Jack Jenkins (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Justin Holliday (Stow, Ohio) struck just 40 seconds apart midway through the frame to give the Rams a two-goal cushion heading into the second intermission.ÂÂ
Freshman Connor Eckenrod (Ebensburg, Pa.) set up Twietmeyer for his third goal of the season 5:24 into the third period to draw the Golden Bears back to within one (3-2), but Western New England was unable to generate any more offense and Holliday sealed the win for Suffolk with his second of the night late in the contest.ÂÂ
Senior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) finished with 29 saves for Suffolk, turning back 13 shots in the first period.
Neither team was able to convert on their opportunities with a man advantage, as the Golden Bears and Rams were a combined 0-for-5 on the power play.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday night, as Western New England (1-15-3, 0-9-1 ECAC NE) returns home to host Nichols, and Suffolk (12-5-2, 7-2-2 ECAC NE) hits the road for a matchup at Curry.
